During the COVID-19 pandemic, Paul Wilkins worked nights stacking shelves at his local supermarket, taking on a key worker role during the crisis. At the same time, musical theatre writers James Beeny and Gina Georgio were producing “Strange Old World”, an original song performed virtually by UK frontline workers. Wilkins described it as “a stunning piece that taps into a very wholesome and rooted emotion” (Theatre Weekly). This project led to the formation of The Frontline Singers, a group soon invited to audition for Britain’s Got Talent.
As lead soloist, Wilkins guided The Frontline Singers to four “Yes” votes and a standing ovation, advancing them to the live semi-finals on ITV. The group’s appearance celebrated the resilience of frontline workers, bringing Wilkins’ message of unity to a national audience.
